By Paul N. "Pete" McCloskey Jr.
Sunday, 15 April 2007
Hosted at, and Co-Sponsored by:
International House, University of California, Berkeley |
After serving in the U.S. Marines, "Pete" McCloskey joined the United World Federalists.
A Member of Congress from 1967 till 1983, he is a progressive Republican and a determined, but friendly fighter for the causes he believes in, including good government.
A co-founder of the first Earth Day in 1970 and cosponsor of several important environmental bills, including the Endangered Species Act, he feels strongly that the current administration has weakened environmental laws and programs. With an anti-war message, he ran against President Richard Nixon in 1972 and obtained 20% of the vote in the early New Hampshire Republican primary.
He was the first Republican Member of Congress to call publicly for the impeachment of Nixon after the Watergate scandal and the "Saturday Night Massacre."
An opponent of the U.S. war in Iraq, in 2006 he ran against "DeLay Republicans," saying "They don't have any Republican values I remember."
